Adriana Couto Silva
I am a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst licensed to practice in Washington D.C., Maryland, and New York with over 30 years of experience in the healthcare professions. My approach prioritizes active, empathic listening and the nurturing of a connected therapist-patient relationship. My patients are adults from diverse cultures, gender identities, racial, religious, social, and linguistic backgrounds, including immigrants who struggle with issues related to acculturation, separation from their native country, and transgenerational trauma.
In addition to my private practice, I remain actively engaged in professional mentorship and ongoing dialogue within the field. I currently serve as Chair of the Fellowship Program at the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis (ICP+P) in Washington, DC, and as a guest editor for special issues of Psychoanalytic Inquiry focusing on Latin Voices and Digital Cultures. I also mentor the recipients of the Early Professional Career Award, an initiative of the International Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology (IAPSP). Outside of my professional work, I facilitate a meditation group called Wren Zen.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis
My therapeutic approach is grounded in Relational Self Psychology and other contemporary psychoanalytic perspectives that thoughtfully engage with issues of gender, culture, ethnicity, race, power, and class. I aim to create a genuine, emotionally attuned relationship where we can safely explore personal challenges—ranging from anxiety, depression, grief, and mourning to relational conflicts and the broader sociocultural context that shapes our lives.
Depending on your needs and preferences, you may choose between psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. Both modalities are rooted in the same foundational principles; the key difference lies in frequency. Psychodynamic psychotherapy typically involves one to two sessions per week, while psychoanalysis is more intensive, with three to four sessions per week. I offer both in-person and remote sessions to suit your circumstances.
People seek therapy with me for a variety of reasons, including anxiety, depression, loss, transgenerational trauma, relationship difficulties, life transitions, parenting, and the complex experiences of voluntary or involuntary migration. I also work with individuals navigating identity, social, and cultural issues.
Attachment & Joyful Relationships
I work with parents and caregivers who are seeking support in understanding their preschool children’s emotional and relational needs through the Circle of Security Parenting (COS-P) program. This 8-to10-week program, grounded in attachment theory, offers a reflective space to explore your child’s emotional world and learn how to support their ability to manage feelings, build self-esteem, and develop secure, connected relationships.
In some cases, I may also provide play therapy for young children (ages 0-6) whose parents are participating in the Circle of Security program with me, offering an additional layer of support tailored to the child’s developmental needs.
In addition to my private practice, I serve as a clinician with the Lourie Center, delivering the Circle of Security program to both early childhood educators and caregivers in Prince George’s County. This work is embedded within a larger research initiative led by the University of Maryland’s Department of Psychology, which is evaluating the implementation and outcomes of the Circle of Security in preschool settings.
Payment
I am an out-of-network provider. I accept major credit cards for payment, including Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Saving Accounts (HSA).
